No. 740 2017 Aug 13 Somerville, MA
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

International Space Station
---------------------------

The Dragon CRS-11 cargo ship was unberthed from the ISS at about 1800
UTC Jul 2 and released at 0641 UTC Jul 3. It splashed down in the
Pacific at about 1214 UTC Jul 3, returning about 1700 kg of cargo to Earth.

On Jul 7 the five BIRDS cubesats were ejected from the J-SSOD No. 7
deployer, which was extracted from the Kibo module by the JEM RMS arm.

On Jul 20 at 1746 UTC Progress MS-05 undocked; it was deorbited and
reentered at 2141 UTC the same day.

On Jul 28 Soyuz MS-05 was launched at 1541 UTC and docked with the
Rassvet module at 2154 UTC. Crew are Ryazanskiy, Bresnik and Nespoli,
joining the existing Expedition 52 crew of Yurchikin, Fischer and
Whitson.

On Aug 8 the SSRMS/SPDM robot arms were used to begin moving the broken
MBSU (Main Bus Switching Unit) from the ESP-2 platform. It was brought
inside ISS for repair via the Kibo airlock on Aug 9 - something that
hasn't been done before. The MBSU, launched in 2002, was removed from the
S0 truss on May 5 and was stashed on ESP-2 until now. Different sources
give the MBSU mass as 100 kg or around 250 kg.

SpaceX were scheduled to launch Dragon CRS-12 on Aug 14. The mission
carries the 1258 kg CREAM package to study TeV cosmic rays, as well as
the 45 kg KestrelEye IIM imaging satellite for the US Army and three
NASA-sponsored cubesats: the 3U OSIRIS-3U space weather package for Penn
State, the 6U Dellingr technology and space physics satellite for
NASA-Goddard, and the 6U ASTERIA spacecraft for JPL and MIT. ASTERIA
(formerly known as ExoplanetSat) will demonstrate arcsecond pointing
with a cubesat, and perform stellar exoplanet transit photometry.

IS-35e
-------

The Intelsat IS-35e communications payload was launched into geotransfer orbit
by a Falcon 9 on Jul 5. By Jul 21 it was in GEO over 33.0W.

Soyuz cluster launch
--------------------

On Jul 14 Roskosmos launched a Soyuz with the Kanopus-V-IK imaging satellite and 72 small secondary
payloads deployed in three batches.
It's still not clear which catalog number goes with which payload for the 19 satellites deployed in the second batch.

The Soyuz placed the Fregat upper stage on a suborbital trajectory. Fregat
made multiple burns to several different orbits to dispense its payloads.
 0636 UTC Launch Orbit
 0645-0652 Fregat burn 1 180? x 500? km
 0735-0736 Fregat burn 2 480 x 522
 0738 Kanopus deployed
 0813-0814 Fregat burn 3 500? x 600?
 0858-0859 Fregat burn 4 600? x 600?
0901-0905 Deployed 5 satellites - probably FLP, Technosat, WNISAT, Norsat-1/2
0910-0926 Deployed 19 satellites - probably MKA-N 1/2, CICERO, Corvus, LEMUR, NanoACE, Mayak, Iskra, EUTE-YuzGU
 0951-0953 Fregat burn 5 485? x 600?
 1034-1035 Fregat burn 6 485 x 485
 1418-1441 Deployed 48 Flock-2k Dove satellites
 1451-1453 Fregat burn 7 -50? x 485
 1518 Fregat reentry

FLP, the Flying Laptop, is from the U. of Stuttgart. The 120 kg satellite has a Ka-band propagation
study experiment and a multispectral camera.

NORSAT-1 and 2 are Norwegian Space Center satellites with AIS payloads and an experiment to measure
total solar irradiance. They use a variant of the Toronto UTIAS/SFL GNB bus.

WNISAT-1R is a 40 kg Japanese commercial weather satellite using the AXELSPACE Hodoyoshi bus.

Technosat from the Tech. U of Berlin carries a variety of technology tests using the new TUBiX20
 satellite bus.

MKA-N 1 and 2 are 6U cubesats built by Russia's Dauria Aerospace for Rosksmos with 22-m resolution
multispectral imagers. CICERO 1 to 3 are 6U cubesats for the US company GeoOptics built by Tyvak, with GPS-RO weather
payloads. Corvus-BC 1 and 2 are 6U cubesats from the US company AstroDigital (formerly Canopus) with imaging payloads.
NanoACE is a 3U technology test cubesat from Tyvak.

Iskra-MAI-85 is a 3U student cubesat from MAI (Moscow Aviation Inst.); I don't know what payloads are on it.

Ekvador-UTE-YuZGU is a 1U cubesat built by students at the SW State Univ in Kursk in collaboration with
Ecuadorian engineers from Universidad Tecnologica Equinoccial in Quito. I don't know whether it will be UN-registered
 as Russian or Ecuadorian.

Mayak ("beacon") is a 3U cubesat from Moscow Polytechnic University. It was designed to deploy a highly
reflective structure about 2m across which would act as a drag brake but also as an optical beacon.
The intent was that Mayak will be one of the brightest objects in the night sky; different calculations
put the maximum brightness in the mag -5 to mag -10 range; however, the reflector failed to deploy.

The mission also deployed 8 SpireGlobal 3U-cubesat Lemur satellites and 48 Planet 3U-cubesat Dove imaging
 satellites forming the Flock-2k constellation.

Cassini
-------

The Cassini probe passed through Saturn orbital periapsis 287 at 1730
UTC Aug 7; it is in a 2534 x 1213722 km x 61.8 deg orbit around Saturn.
By Aug 20, on periapsis 289, the minimum height above the cloud tops
will drop to 1300 km. A distant encounter with Titan on Sep 11 will
perturb the orbit to drop periapsis by a further 2000 km, which will
lead to a fatal 31 km/s (112000 km/hr) plunge into the Saturnian
atmosphere on Sep 15.

Simorgh
-------

On Jul 27 Iran carried out a test flight of its Simorgh satellite launch
vehicle. (It is believed there was an earlier test of the rocket in Apr
2016.) Iranian sources indicate the flight was a suborbital test of the
vehicle rather than an orbital attempt. Despite news reports citing US
government sources saying it was a failure, but giving no details, I am
carrying it as a successful suborbital mission for the time being.
Simorgh is similar in design to the Unha space rockets launched by North
Korea in 2012.

Biarri Point
------------

I now suspect that the Biarri-Point satellite, carrying an Australian GPS receiver, is
actually the AFRL's SHARC satellite under another name. Recent press reports indicate
that Biarri-Point is a 6U (0.6m long) cubesat like SHARC, rather than a 3U as claimed
earlier.

Electron
--------

The "It's a Test" mission on May 25 reportedly reached 224 km altitude
before the second stage was commanded to shut down, resulting in the
vehicle falling back into the ocean. The mission was aborted because the
telemetry link was lost.

Vega VV10
---------

The European solid-propellant Vega launcher placed two Israeli-built satellites in orbit on
Aug 2. OptSat-3000 is an imaging satellite for the Italian military (developed as part of an exchange
of military equipment between Israel and Italy). Venus is a vegetation monitoring satellite;
the last-but-one letter is annoyingly spelt with a Greek letter mu rather than a u, just to make
things difficult.

Tianzhou-1
----------

The Tianzhou-1 freighter continues its independent flight. On Aug 1 it
ejected the Silu-1 (Silk Road 1) 3U cubesat, buit by
SpaceStarTech/Beijing for the Xian Survey Bureau.

CanX-7
------

Henry Spencer reminds me that I didn't mention Toronto's CanX-7 satellite deployed its drag sails on May 2.

Table of Recent Suborbital Launches
-----------------------------------

North Korea test-launched the Hwasong-14 (HS-14) missile from Kusong on Jul 4 to
a range of 930 km and a high apogee of 2802 km. On Jul 28 a second
flight of Hwasong-14, this time from Chagang province, reached an apogee
of around 3700 km. If launched for maximum range, it appears this
missile could reach over 11000 km, and so counts as an ICBM.

Each of these launches was followed a few hours later by launches by
the US 8th Army and South Korean forces of two small missiles from a
beach near the N Korean border.

On Aug 8 North Korea, protesting US bomber flights in S Korea near the
DMZ, announced it was considering a quadruple test launch of the HS-12
with targets in the Pacific around the island of Guam.
